Being in a relationship with a person with sex and pornography addiction is different than being a partner of a substance abuser. For people whose partner has cheated on them or has  “acted out” with something do with sex, it feels personal. It is betrayal. It impacts every area of their lives. It impacts the way they see themselves physically, emotionally, and spiritually. They become isolated because they are too ashamed to tell anyone.

Individual therapy for betrayed partners starts with treating the betrayal trauma. It is about learning to self-regulate just to get through the day. As therapy continues, and full functioning returns, the work will shift to finding your voice, becoming empowered, and learning how to take care of yourself emotionally, physically, spiritually, and intellectually.

When sexual betrayal is first discovered, the couple is in turmoil. This is not traditional couples therapy but instead, think of it as couples crisis therapy. Our initial work with couples is about containment. Early in the process, we set a structure on how to communicate honestly about difficult issues. The couple goes through a process where they set boundaries for themselves and for each other as a way of creating safety. A large part of this therapy is to teach the person who has acted out sexually how to show up and hold space for the wounded partner. We work on helping him or her gain and show empathy. This couples counseling is designed to help the couple survive and learn from the trauma that was caused by sexual betrayal, sex, and pornography addiction or infidelity. If the partner is interested, this counseling supports the reconciliation letter writing process of disclosure, clarification letter, impact letter, and empathy letter. This type of counseling may also support the therapeutic separation process as well. We also teach concrete communication strategies to help during this time of crisis. We practice these skills in sessions. As time goes on in therapy and the crisis starts to dissipate, we adjust the treatment plan to include materials from John Gottman, Sue Johnson, and Alexandra Katehakis.

For those clients seeking video therapy and those who need a higher level of care, or those coming out of inpatient treatment and need this type of service, we are offering customized local Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP). These programs vary in length and are customized to meet the client’s specific treatment needs. Topics and modalities of the program may include sex addiction/pornography/love addiction intervention and treatment, child of origin trauma, Lifespan Integration, EMDR, co-dependency, self-esteem, etc. The IOP may involve other sex addiction therapists (CSAT) who work in the same building in Seattle or Kirkland, depending on the needs of the client.

We offer online assessments, treatment, therapy, and counseling through our online private and secure Zoom therapy system. The good news is we’ve already been doing online therapy sessions for a few years, for those seeking help for sex and pornography addiction betrayed partner or infidelity counseling, and substance abuse or childhood trauma therapy. We treat both men and women individually, as couples, and in group sessions. The online therapy sessions are great if you live out of the area or out of state.  We have the experience to guide you through the healing process online. To participate in video therapy, a thorough assessment must be completed to determine if this modality of treatment is clinically appropriate. We also require clients to come to our office in Seattle to meet with us for several sessions in person in order to establish a good rapport. If the client is coming from Alaska or Hawaii, we require them to either go to inpatient or intensive outpatient treatment through another facility or come to Seattle for a week-long customized intensive outpatient treatment program with therapists from Fourth Dimension Counseling and other sex addiction therapists located in our building in Issaquah, WA., prior to beginning individual video therapy. We also offer men’s sex addiction group therapy through video using the confidential and secure private Zoom online therapy system.

We offer several men’s sex and pornography addiction groups per week. Because sex addiction is an intimacy disorder, group therapy is an important part of the recovery process. As you learn how to be honest and emotionally intimate with other men, you learn to be more intimate with your partner. The magic in groups occurs with the peer-to-peer relationships that are formed in this process. Believe it or not, there are other men who feel and experience the same guilt, shame, and fear that you do. You are not alone and our online group therapy sessions for men dealing with sex and pornography addiction issues is an honest, powerful, healing, and forgiving process that you, others with the same affliction can heal from and grow through together.

As part of the group format, you will present assignments in a group and regularly share about what is going on in your life and then will receive feedback from other group members and from your group therapist. As you share in the group those things you maybe thought you would take to the grave, you will feel immense relief, a sense of emotional freedom and you will experience a reduction in shame. All while you are building a brotherhood with other men who experience the exact same feelings as you.

You will be given regular homework and will be encouraged to have regular contact with therapy group members outside of the group.

We offer individual therapy for men and women who are in 12-step programs and who are seeking outside help for their “other addictions” or “outside issues.” The therapists at Fourth Dimension Counseling are long-time members of 12-step programs themselves so we understand what your up against and what you are going through. We’ve been there ourselves.

We each have sought outside therapeutic help and counseling in our own lives. As such, we know the importance of having a therapist who understands and respects the 12-step process. The work you do with your therapist will go beyond what you can accomplish with your sponsor and the 12 Steps.

Together, you and your therapist will examine coping mechanisms that you developed when you were young that helped you adapt to the environment you were in at the time. These coping patterns may have been very effective for you for some time, but along the way, they quit working and started causing you difficulties in your life. The goal of therapy is for you to discover what does and does not work and to develop strategies to make changes in order to have a happier, more balanced, and serene life.
