Problematic Sexual Behavior: Understanding, Treatment, Counseling & Recovery
What Is Problematic Sexual Behavior?
Problematic sexual behavior—including compulsive sexual activities, pornography addiction, and sex addiction—can significantly impact mental health, relationships, and overall well-being. These behaviors often cause shame, guilt, and isolation, making it difficult for those affected to seek help. Professional counseling and therapy offer a pathway toward understanding, managing, and ultimately healing from these challenges.
Understanding Problematic Sexual Behavior
Problematic sexual behavior is not about having a healthy sex drive—it is about loss of control. Individuals struggling with sex or pornography addiction often find that their urges interfere with daily responsibilities, relationships, work performance, and self-esteem. This pattern typically involves compulsive consumption of pornography, frequent risky sexual encounters, or inability to stop despite negative consequences.
Mental health professionals recognize that this behavior often stems from deeper issues such as childhood trauma, attachment wounds, anxiety, depression, or unmet emotional needs. Addressing these root causes is essential for lasting recovery.

When your life blows up due to problematic compulsive sexual behavior, it can feel overwhelming. We offer individual therapy that starts with a thorough assessment to determine the course of treatment.
This assessment is a combination of psychological testing, interviews, and a detailed sexual history. From there, we work with you to create a personalized treatment plan that best addresses your needs.
This treatment plan may involve a combination of individual therapy, group therapy, and 12 step attendance if so desired. Depending on the severity of the addiction and what else may be going on with you, we may create a 30-day Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) that will enable you to stay home and work and be with your family, while at the same time, jump-starting your recovery. We also may refer you to an out-of-state workshop or Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) to provide you with a higher level of care.

Recognizing the Signs and Symptoms
One of the first steps toward recovery is identifying whether sexual behavior has crossed into addiction territory. Common signs include:
Spending excessive time viewing pornography or pursuing sexual activities
Escalation of behavior over time (seeking more intense material or risky situations)
Failed attempts to quit or cut back
Neglecting work, family, or social obligations
Using sex or pornography to cope with stress, loneliness, or difficult emotions
Feelings of guilt, shame, or secrecy surrounding sexual activities
Recognizing these patterns helps individuals understand they are not alone—and that professional help is available.
